The good news is, once you gain residency rights in Spain, you will have the right to reside in any other country in the EU. So, first apply for residency in any EU country if and where you have relatives or ancestors. This is the quickest and easiest way to your goal of residency in Spain.
No relatives or ancestors? Then, you need a visa, if you wish to stay in Spain for more than three months. (please read our help seciton on applying for a visa).
*N.B. If you are not the spouse of an EU citizen, and wish to obtain a residency in Spain, you have 30-90 days to find a company willing to sponsor you.
DOCUMENTATION FOR OBTAINING A RESIDENCE CARD – NON-EU CITIZEN
• A valid passport.
• A current Residence Visa
• Proof of previous legal residence in Spain e.g. long-term rental contract, rent receipts.
• A Certificate of Criminal Record issued by the authorities in your home country.
• Three passport-size photographs.
• A Medical Certificate (certificado medico) if not presented at time of Visa application.
• Proof of income to support yourself during residency ( e.g.pensions, salary receipts or that you meet the criteria to work in a self-employed capacity.)
• Proof that you health insurance is in place for the duration of your residency.
• Certificate of Marriage or Divorce or other legal documents proving your marital status. N.B. A Spanish translation will be required if to reunite with your family.
Renewals of Residency Permits are issued, provided that personal or economic situations remain unchanged. Application must be made at least a month before expiration of the permit, to avoid the possibility of a fine.
You should carry your Residence Permit with you at all times. It is your identity card and contains your fiscal registration number. (NIE)
